Facts you need to know before you move to postgrad study

Between gulping down extra-large double shot lattes and studying for your final exams, you’ve probably started thinking about what postgrad study options are available.
Signing up for another semester of studying can be daunting, but whether you’re continuing your education to further your passion or to pursue a particular career, we’ve put together five facts you need to know before you take the next step.

1. Know what you’re signing up for

If you think that postgraduate study is just a repeat of your undergraduate degree, think again. Postgraduate courses require you to study more independently than your undergrad courses. They’re also usually heavily project or research-focused, which can be great if you really like the idea of being able to sink your academic teeth into a certain subject or topic.

2. You have options

A master’s degree isn’t your only option. If you don’t want to commit to a full master’s degree, you can always look into a shorter qualification like a graduate certificate or graduate diploma. These alternatives take between six months to a year of full-time study to complete.

3. It’s all about who you know

Have you ever heard the saying ‘it’s not about WHAT you know, but WHO you know’? Well, postgrad programs will not only help you specialise in your chosen field, but it’s also a great way to establish some valuable networks. You’ll work with a range of a different people across group projects and within your classes, but it’s also worth getting involved by joining a campus club or attending university social events. It’s time to start seriously networking!

4. You’ll be adding to your CV

Postgraduate programs often lead to professional recognition in your industry and in many cases you’ll meet peers that you’ll be working alongside for many years in the future. Work hard and you’ll probably be recognised, so get ready to start editing and adding to your resume!

If you’re nearing the end of your undergraduate degree, but you’re still unsure of the path you want to pursue after university, postgraduate study for international students may provide an opportunity to narrow down your area of interest. How to get your postgraduate paperwork sorted?

Many international students choose to stay in Australia and complete further studies or gain a higher qualification. If you’ve decided that postgrad study is for you, here’s what you’ll need to do:

Lodge an application for a new Student visa with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection before your current visa expires
Make sure you have enough money to cover your studies and living expenses
Extend your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) with nib
Apply for your chosen course by the deadline provided by your chosen university
